The Duchy of Camerino (formerly Lordship from around 1259 to 1515) was a small independent state, an enclave within the Papal States, ruled for almost 300 years by the Da Varano family, originally from the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto. In 1515, the last gentleman, Giovanni Maria, was created duke by Pope Leo X, but the new rank only lasted until 1539..
