Andrea Dandolo appartient à cette grande famille, dont l'ancêtre Jean a créé le sequin en 1284. Le nom de cette monnaie vient du nom de la tour que l'on peut voir encore aujourd'hui sur la place Saint-Marc où furent frappées lespremières pièces. Andréa Dandolo dut lutter contre les Génois et les Turques (1343-1346). Il mit fin à la révolte de Zara en Damlatie. Il fut l'ami de Pétrarque.
