François de la Rovère, Franciscan theologian, was elected pope at the age of 57, on August 9, 1471, under the name of Sixtus IV. In 1478 he was accused of having provoked the assassination of Giuliano de Medici. He erected the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. He died on August 12, 1484.
