Historical background

ITALY - KINGDOM OF ITALY - NAPOLEON

(18/03/1805-11/04/1814)

Napoleon accepts the crown of Italy March 17, 1805. After a triumphal entry into Milan May 8, 1805, Josephine and it crowned on May 26 by Cardinal Caprara. As to Paris a few months earlier, Napoleon crowned himself exclaiming: "God has given me, beware that the". This exclamation will become the motto of the Order of the Iron Crown (see FEES IV pp.III-V). The Emperor appointed his son-Prince Eugene de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy and leaves Milan June 10, 1805. He returned to Paris on 1 August to join the camp of Boulogne. The fate of Italy is now linked to that of France for nine years. Beginning in January 1814, the defection of Murat and his alliance with the Austrians and with the British in order to keep his kingdom of Naples, Italy lost. Prince Eugene, despite a heroic defense, can not prevent the collapse of the kingdom after Mantua has fallen. April 6, 1814, Napoleon abdicated.
