En 1848, Rome sombre aussi dans la vague révolutionnaire qui traverse l’Europe. Des troubles éclatent et le Pape quitte Rome de 9 Décembre 1848. Le 9 Février, la République Romaine est proclamée. La ville d’Ancône (Ancona) qui fait partie des États Pontificaux proclame se joint à l’insurrection romaine. Pie IX demande alors aux troupes autrichiennes d’intervenir. Le port de la côte adriatique sera assiégée et resistera du 24 mai au 19 juin..

The city of Ancona, part of the Papal States, joined the Roman insurrection. Pius IX then asked Austrian troops to intervene. The port on the Adriatic coast was besieged and held out from May 24 to June 19.
