Rapallo est une ville italienne d'environ 30 500 habitants, située dans la ville métropolitaine de Gênes, dans la région Ligurie, dans le nord-ouest de l'Italie. De 1805 à 1814, Rapallo fit partie de l'arrondissement de Chiavari, dans le département des Apennins, créé le 6 juin 1805, dans le cadre de la nouvelle organisation administrative mise en place par Napoléon Ier en Italie et supprimé le 11 avril 1814, après la chute de l'Empire.
C'est à Rapallo que fut composée en 1901 l'ébauche de ce qui allait devenir la symphonie nº 2 de Sibelius.
Le 12 novembre 1920, le traité de Rapallo y fut signé. Un autre traité y fut conclu, le 16 avril 1922, entre l'Allemagne et l'URSS, dans le but de normaliser leurs relations..
