La médaille célèbre le cinquantième anniversaire du premier congrès des scientifiques italiens, qui s'est tenu à Pise en 1839. ITALY - GRAND DUCHY OF TUSCANY - LEOPOLD II
(1824-1859)
Leopold II of Tuscany (1797-1870) was the son of Ferdinand III of Tuscany (1769-1824) and Louise of the Two Sicilies (1773-1802). He is the nephew of Emperor Francis I of Habsburg. His sister, Thérèse, married Charles-Albert of Sardinia. He is an ultra-conservative. He succeeded his father in 1824. He was forced to abdicate in 1859 in favor of his son Ferdinand IV (1835-1908) who was himself overthrown the following year. Victor-Emmanuel II becomes king of unified Italy in 1861.
