Louis d'Este appartient à une illustre famille princière d'Italie : la famille d'Este. Cette famille fait remonter son origine au commencement du onzième siècle. La famille d'Este s'implanta à Modène après avoir été chassée de Ferrare.
Louis d'Este est le fils de Hercule II d'Este, duc de Modène, de Ferrare et de Reggio, et de la princesse Renée de France, duchesse de Chartres et de Montargis.
Louis, cardinal d'Est, est nommé commandeur de l'ordre du S. Esprit sous le règne de Henri III, le 31 décembre 1579 .

(1572-1586)
Louis (1538-1586), Cardinal d'Este, is the second son of the Duke of Modena Hercule II (1508-1559), Duke of Ferrara, and Renée de France (1510-1575), the daughter of Louis XII and d 'Anne de Bretagne, whom he married in 1528. François Ier is therefore his uncle. On the death of his father in 1559, it was his older brother, Alphonse II, who administered the duchy. Louis was Archbishop of Auch and Narbonne. It was often employed by the kings of France Charles IX and Henri III to counterbalance the Spanish influence in Italy and Rome. Louis died in 1586 second son of the Duke of Modena Hercule II (1508-1559) Duke of Ferrara DUKE OF FERRARE, OF MODENA OR OF BOTH?.
