After 17 years, 8 months and 16 days of pontificate, Benedict XIV died on May 3, 1758. The Sede Vacante lasted from May 3, 1758 to July 6, 1758. The Carmelingian Cardinal Girolamo Colonna di Sciarra ensured the vacancy until the election of the Venetian Carlo della Torre di Rezzonico adopting the name Clement XIII.
