Paul IV died on August 18, 1559. The vacancy was given to Cardinal Guido Ascanio Sforza and was short-lived. Pius IV (Giovannangelo de' Medici) was in fact elected on December 25, 1559. Cardinal Guido Ascanio Sforza had already ensured the vacancy of the pontifical see in 1549-1550, on the death of Paul III and, in 1555, on the death of Julius III.
