Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - PIUS VIII (Francesco Castiglioni)

(31/03/1829-30/11/1830)

After a first failure during the election of Leo XII in 1823, Castiglioni became pope on March 31, 1829, after the death of Leo XII, at the age of sixty-eight. He takes the name of Pius VIII. On May 24, 1829 he published the encyclical Traditi humilitati nostrae, supplemented on March 25, 1830 by the bull Litteris altero, in which he condemned secret societies and specified that the blessing of the Church is only given during the ceremony marriage, only after the promise of the bride and groom to raise their children in the Catholic religion. This new rule will quickly become a source of conflict in the Protestant Kingdom of Prussia between the bishops and the government. He also had to deal with the European unrest that prepared the revolutions of 1848, particularly in the Papal States where he had to deal with the insurrection attempts made by the carbonari. Pius VIII died in Rome on November 30, 1830..
