ITALY - UNITED CHURCH - LEON XIII (Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci)

(20/2/1878-20/7/1903)

On Sienese origin, Leo XIII was nuncio in Brussels, Bishop of Perugia, then dice Cardinal 1853. He became Pope February 20, 1878 after a conclave that lasted only two days. Fairly liberal and listening changes of his time, he was a skillful diplomat and restores diplomatic relations with Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Russia. Socially, he denounced the excesses of capitalism and undertook to defend the workers. There is also one that opened to researchers the Vatican archives.
