Commentary

Antoine Pignatelli (1615-1700) succède à Alexandre VIII (1689-1691) qui avait réussi à se faire restituer le Comtat Venaissin en 1690 par Louis XIV, lequel s'en était emparé sous le pontificat d'Innocent XI (1676-1689). Innocent XII est élu à 76 ans après un conclave de cinq mois et fait la paix avec Louis XIV. Il meurt le 27 septembre 1700.
Antoine Pignatelli (1615-1700) succeeds Alexander VIII (1689-1691) who had succeeded in having the Comtat Venaissin returned to him in 1690 by Louis XIV, who had seized it under the pontificate of Innocent XI (1676-1689) . Innocent XII was elected at age 76 after a five-month conclave and made peace with Louis XIV. He died on September 27, 1700
