Commentary

All medals of this type seem to come from the same obverse and reverse dies, including the silver ones (e.g. Numismatica Ranieri, Asta 6, Lot 202, sold for $581 in 2014). Blessed Innocent XI, born Benedetto Odescalchi in Como, Lombardy, on May 16, 1611 and died on August 12, 1689, was the 238th pope, from September 21, 1676 until his death. He was undoubtedly one of the most remarkable popes of a difficult era. He confronted the King of France, who had not hesitated to ally himself with the Turks to subdue the Catholic House of Austria and had no qualms about inciting them to march on Vienna. The King of Poland and the Doge of Venice thwarted the plans of the King of France thanks to the Pope's action, which helped to stop the advance of Islam. This defender of the Church was also a modest, austere, and very charitable man, as was evident when he personally came to the aid of victims of the plague and other epidemics. He paid careful attention to the training of the clergy.
