Le bienheureux Innocent XI, né Benedetto Odescalchi à Côme, en Lombardie, le 16 mai 1611 et mort le 12 août 1689, fut le 238e pape, du 21 septembre 1676 à sa mort.
Ce fut sans aucun doute l’un des papes les plus remarquables d'une époque difficile. Il affronte le roi de France qui n’a pas hésité à s’allier aux Turcs pour abaisser la Maison d’Autriche catholique et n'a pas de scrupules à les inciter à marcher sur Vienne.
