Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - GREGORY XIII (Ugo Boncompagni)

(05/13/1572-04/10/1585)

Cardinal-Legate Charles de Bourbon

Gregory XIII (1510-1582) enforced the decrees of the Council of Trent. He is best known for the reform that bears his name, the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. To make up for the delay taken by the Julian calendar (of Julius Caesar) since its adoption, eleven days, we passed in 1582 from April 4 to 15, thus catching up with the delay accumulated by the Julian year. Charles de Bourbon, Antoine's brother, is thus Henri IV's uncle. On the death of Henry III, he will be proclaimed under the name of Charles X by the leaguers, but will never reign because he was a prisoner of his nephew. He died on May 9, 1590. Pope's legate in Avignon since 1565, cardinal and archbishop of Rouen since 1550, it was he who celebrated the wedding of Henry II of Navarre (future Henry IV of France) with Marguerite de Valois ( Queen Margot) on August 18, 1572, on the eve of Saint-Barthélemy.
