Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - GREGORY X (Tebaldo Visconti)

(1329-03/26/1378)

Originally from Plaisance, he was a simple vicar accompanying Edward of England on a pilgrimage to Palestine when he was summoned to the conclave following the death of Clement IV. He was elected on September 1, 1271 and enthroned on March 27, 1272. Gregory X's grand design was to rally the Mongol emperor to Christianity in order to counter Islam and save the Kingdom of the Crusaders in the Holy Land. To this end, he favors the embassy of Matteo and Niccolò (known as Marco) Polo. He also tries to reconcile Guelphs and Ghibellines. He died on January 10, 1276.
