Commentary

In 1860, following the flight of the Grand Dukes of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, Tuscany was annexed to Piedmont. Encouraged by several plebiscites, Victor Emmanuel II had coins minted at the Florence mint bearing his image and the inscription \\\"Elected King of Italy.\\\" Florence served as the short-lived capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1865 to 1870, until the fall of Rome.
