Historical background

ISAAC II ANGEL

(12.09.1185 - 04.08.1195)

Isaac is a descendant women Alexis I Comnenus. After the assassination of Andronicus I Comnenus after taking Thessaloniki in 1185, Isaac II inherited a decaying Empire. Caught between the Bulgarian power and expansionist Crusader, he was finally deposed and blinded by his brother Alexius III Comnenus Ange. Eight years later, after Constantinople taken by the Venetians, Isaac II regained the throne associated with Alexis Angel IV, son. They were eventually killed both by the mob, 28 January 1204. 12 April 1204, the Crusaders took Constantinople, sacked and pillaged the city.
