Historical background

IONIE - Teos

(Sixth - fifth century BC)

Teos was a very old city that its inhabitants abandoned in 544 BC, when the Persians invaded Ionia, to found Abdera in Thrace. Less than 50 years later, settlers of Abdera refondirent the Asia Minor city which is why the two cities had griffins on their coinage. Teos was famous for its temple of Ionic order built by Hermogenes and devoted to Dionysus.
