Historical background

IONIE - Clazomenae

(III - II century BC)

Clazomenae, located in the southern peninsula of the Gulf of Smyrna, was placed under the protection of Apollo, protector of herds. The swan appears on the reverse seems to have been a pun with the name of the city. At the mouth of the Hermus Delta, Clazomenae was a farming region. Anaxagoras was from Clazomenae.
