Historical background

INDIA - GWALIOR

(1731-1948)

The princely state of Gwalior was formed around the city of Gwalior by the mighty Sindhia dynasty, mighty rulers of the Marathi Empire. At the end of the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-1818), a peace treaty was signed with the British. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (known as the Revolt of the Sepoys), the Sindhia took the side of supporting the British although part of the troops took the side of the rebellion. In 1947, during independence, the state of Gwalior is integrated into the Dominion of India, future Republic of India.
