Commentary

Historical background

Unspecified imitation, of Marseille influence

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

The model of the first Marseille drachmas, with a female head on the obverse and a lion on the reverse, was widely copied. From northern Italy (with the Ligurian drachmas) to the center of France (with the drachmas from the Trésor de Bridiers) the influence of Marseilles is no longer always evident, but has spread very widely..
