Historical background

Illyria - Dyrrachium

(III - II century BC)

Epidamnos colony of Corcyra was founded in 623 BC The city was the capital of Dyrrachi. In 435 BC, a conflict broke out between Dyrrachium and Corinth, the origin of the Peloponnesian War. It was also at this time that the city changed its name to become Dyrrachium instead of Epidamnos. The mid-fourth century BC, the city entered the Corinthian orbit and minted at the Corinthian type. In 312 BC, Glaucias, king of the Illyrians took the city with the help of Corcyreans. Around 280 BC, the Macedonian Dyrrachium was in orbit Ptolemy Céraunos. The city was then destroyed by the Illyrian tribes and eventually placed under the Roman protectorate in 229 BC When the Romans began to occupy the region in the late third century BC, they renamed the city name Dyrrachium. She became at the end of the Republic the most important trading port with Italy from Brindisium.
