Commentary

According to E. Babelon, Traité, op. cit., p. 184, the standard for species after 229 BC would be Roman rather than Victorian-based Illyrian. The copy of MONNAIES 47, n° 71 sold for €370

Historical background

ILLYRIA - APOLLONIA

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Apollonia was a colony of Corcyra, itself a colony of Corinth. The city first suffered the Corinthian influence. It then fell under the Roman protectorate from 229 BC. From 100 BC, it supplanted Dyrrachium and replaced it. The city was famous for the quality of its higher education. Octavian, a student, was in Apollonia when Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC.
