Historical background

AEGEAN SEA - ANAPHE

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Anaphe was colonized by the Dorians in the 10th century BC. The city was placed under the protection of Apollo. She joined the first league of Delos. The inhabitants paid tribute to Athens from 427-426 BC. After the defeat of Athens, the city entered the orbit of Sparta before participating in the second Athenian thalassocracy in the 4th century from 370 BC The city was then part of the first league of Nesiotes (314-246 BC) before joining the second league of the same name founded by Rhodes from 196 BC. In the 2nd century, the Cretan League declared the inviolability of the Temple of Apollo (Aigletes). The island still had to suffer from the pirates who infested the Aegean until the Mithridatic wars and the eradication of piracy by Pompey..
