Commentary

La gravure de ce coin est l’œuvre de Joseph Gamot, graveur du roi à la monnaie de Lille. Il reçut le 14 juillet 1734 le brevet de graveur de la ville de Paris.
Michel-Étienne TURGOT, seigneur de Sousmons, Bons, Ussy, Brucourt, etc... est né le 9 juin 1690. Il entra au Parlement, où il devint, en 1717, président à la deuxième chambre des enquêtes ; nommé conseiller d’État par semestre en 1737 il passa ordinaire en 1744. En 1741, il avait été président au Grand Conseil. L’Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres l’admit, en 1743, au nombre de ses membres honoraires, en remplacement du cardinal de Fleury. Il mourut le 1er février 1751.
Turgot est l’un des magistrats municipaux dont la mémoire vivra le plus longtemps ; il s’est toujours préoccupé de l’amélioration de la ville, et il n’a pu réaliser qu’une partie des projets qu’il avait conçus dans ce dessein. On lui doit, entre autres monuments, la fontaine de la rue de Grenelle, une des plus belles œuvres de Bouchardon, qui a été terminée en 1739. Il était d’un grand désintéressement.
