Commentary

Les armes au droit sont écartelées aux 1 et 4 de Madaillan : tranché d’or et de gueules et de Lesparre aux 2 et 3 : d’azur, au lion d’or armé, lampassé et couronné de même. Jeton connu par les comptes de la Monnaie des médailles (publiés par Mazerolle, Gaz. num.), n° 955, frappé en septembre 1719 “Il a été frappé des jetons armoriez aiant pour légende : L. J. DE. MADAILLAN. ENS. DES GENS. D’ARM. DU. ROY, et dans l’exergue 1717. On voit au revers des nuées d’où il sort des foudres, avec ces mots autour : QUO. JUBET. IRATUS. JUPITER. L’exergue représente un sabre hors du fourreau, lequel est dessous”. La famille de Madaillan est très ancienne et tient son nom d’un village du Lot-et-Garonne.
The arms on the right are quartered 1 and 4 of Madaillan: edged or and gules and of Lesparre 2 and 3: azure, with an armed, langued and crowned gold lion. Token known from the accounts of the Mint of Medals (published by Mazerolle, Gaz. num.), no. 955, struck in September 1719 “Armoured tokens were struck with the legend: LJ DE. MADAILLAN. ENS. DES GENS. D'ARM. DU. ROY, and in the exergue 1717. On the reverse we see clouds from which thunderbolts emerge, with these words around: QUO. JUBET. IRATUS. JUPITER. The exergue represents a sabre out of its scabbard, which is underneath”. The Madaillan family is very old and takes its name from a village in Lot-et-Garonne
