Ministre de la Marine, il publia ses mémoires en 1792 sous le titre de Mémoires du comte de Maurepas, ministre de la marine, par Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux Maurepas, il occupa le poste à la Marine du 16 août 1723 au 23 avril 1749. Ce fut un grand Ministre de Louis XV, ennemi déclaré des maîtresses et des dépenses du Roi.
