Commentary
The arms of René de Préaulx are described as follows: argent with a chief sable, a lion gules broaching over all. René de Préaulx was maître d'hôtel to the king, probably to Charles IX, because of the cypher du roi which appears on the reverse on the altar. The reverse legend is found on many of Charles's tokens for the King's Council (F.23 and 25) and the King's Chamber of Accounts (F.1731 ss.). Our reverse was used for several tokens from the reign of Charles IX (F.11682/3, 11688-11688, 11691A and 11729). This token could have been struck in 1565 or 1566.
