Organisée en mai 1911, par Le Petit Parisien, la course Paris-Madrid est la première des grandes courses d'aviation qui allaient marquer l'année 1911. Dotée d'un prix de 100 000 francs, elle apparaît à l'époque comme une tentative surhumaine tant par la longueur du parcours qu'elle impose aux concurrents que par les difficultés qu'elle semble accumuler devant eux, surtout en territoire espagnol.
La course comportait un parcours total de près de 1 200 km divisés en trois étapes : la première de Paris à Angoulême, la seconde d'Angoulême à Saint-Sébastien (frontière espagnole) et le troisième de Saint-Sébastien à Madrid en passant par Burgos..
