Historical background

HUNGARY - TRANSYLVANIA - MICHAEL I APAFI

(1661-1690)

Michel Ier Apafi is elected prince by the States of Transylvania, under the protection of Pasha Ali on September 14, 1661. He is initially opposed to Jean III Kemény whom Austria had made elect; his competitor having died the following year, he is recognized without dispute throughout Transylvania. Allied with the rebellious Hungarians, he waged war on the Emperor Leopold for some time; but after the lifting of the siege of Vienna by the Turks, he abandoned their cause and concluded with the emperor the treaties of Vienna on June 26 and of Blag on October 27, 1686, which imposed on the Transylvanian voivode against the "protection of the Habsburgs", the payment of a tribute and the military occupation of twelve fortresses of the country. He remained Prince of Transylvania until his death in 1690. His son Michael II succeeded him..
