Commentary

Maria Theresa had relied heavily on the Hungarians to establish her throne at the beginning of her reign between 1740 and 1745. She had granted numerous benefits to the Hungarian nobility in exchange for military aid in the War of the Austrian Succession. The Empress remained highly regarded by her Hungarian subjects until her death in 1780. Joseph II questioned this policy. He abolished serfdom in 1781, substituted German for Latin as the official language in 1784, and withdrew some local powers from the counties in 1785. At the end of his reign, Joseph II had to abandon this policy in the face of the growing Turkish threat. The token of Count Palffy is in French, not Latin or German. This Count Palffy was the chancellor of the most important order in Hungary.
