Historical background

HUNGARY - KINGDOM OF HUNGARY - CHARLES I OR CHARLES-ROBERT D'ANJOU

(1308-1342)

Charles was born in 1288. He belonged to the house of Anjou by his grandfather, Charles II of Naples. On the extinction of the Arpadí dynasty, he claimed the crown of Hungary, since through his grandmother he was the great-grandson of Stephen V of Hungary. Several competitors such as Otto of Bavaria and Wenceslas II of Bohemia also presented themselves to occupy the throne. Charles was elected king of Hungary in 1308. He reorganized the army and brought Poland and Hungary closer together. Charles died in Visegrad on July 16, 1342.
