Historical background

HISPANIA - SPAIN - SUSSETANOS - BOLSKAN (OSCA/HUESCA) (Province of Huesca)

(1st century BC)

Quintus Sertorius (123-73 BC), a lieutenant of Marius who was praetor in 85 BC, revolted against Sylla when he seized power in Rome. In 80, he went to Spain, proclaimed himself dictator, struck money and raised his province as well as the Narbonnaise against the authority of Rome. He fought successfully against Metellus and Pompey, but died assassinated in 73 BC (BG. III, 23).
