Historical background

HIPSANIA - SPAIN - BAETICA - COLONIA PATRICIA - AUGUSTUS

(c. 19-2 BC)

Corduba (Cordoba) is located on the right bank of the Guadalquivir in the province of Betica. It would have been founded by Marcellus. Cordoba experienced great prosperity thanks to its exceptional geographical location. The praetor established his residence there and the city became the capital of the province of Betica. The large number of Roman patricians who had come to settle there earned her the nickname of Patricia after Pliny the Elder (III, 1). The city underwent significant development in the first century AD.
