Historical background

HENRY I

Henry was crowned during the lifetime of his father, Robert II, on May 14, 1027, after the death of his older brother Hugh. Constance of Arles, Robert's wife, encouraged her youngest son in 1031 to revolt against the new King. Robert, against his submission, received as an appanage Burgundy which Robert the Pious had united to the royal domain between 1003 and 1006. Constance died the following year, not without having pushed the vassals of Henry I, including Eudes de Blois, to fight against the King of France. Eudes died in Bar on November 15, 1037. His sons, Étienne de Blois and Chartres and Thibaut de Champagne, did not submit until 1044. Sens was reconquered in 1055 by the King who also had to fight against Normandy. From his second marriage to Anne of Kiev was born Philip who was associated with the throne on May 23, 1059. On dying on August 4, 1060, Henry left a minor child aged eight under the regency of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders.
