Commentary
The token combines domestic and foreign political symbolism in the same way. The symbolism of the closed temple of Janus (peace) undoubtedly alludes to internal pacification: in 1795, Pope Clement VIII absolved Henry IV and the king reconciled with the Duke of Mayenne while the governors of Languedoc and Provence submitted to the king. But the legend (PRAELIA) recalls the ongoing fighting between the French and the Spanish. In 1595, Henry IV declared war on Philip II's Spain and it was not until 1598 that the Treaty of Vervins put an end to the conflict.
