Ce double d’or est frappé sur un flan très large et légèrement irrégulier présentant un éclatement avec fente traversante allant jusqu’au-dessus de l’écu. Autre infime fente presque imperceptible sous le EX de REX. Des rayures ayant provoqué de petits plats sur la base du drapé du roi et sur les deux lions. Faiblesse de frappe à 8 heures au revers

Obverse description : Le Roi assis de face sur une chaise curule, entre deux écus de France, avec deux lions à ses pieds, tenant l’épée et le sceptre, dans un polylobe tréflé.
Obverse translation : (Charles, par la grâce de Dieu, roi des Francs).

Reverse description : Croix tréflée et feuillue, avec un point dans un quadrilobe en cœur, cantonnée de quatre lis, le tout dans un quadrilobe accosté de lis.

Commentary


Monnaie de la plus grande rareté absente de bon nombre de collection. Cette émission du Dauphin est connue pour seulement deux ateliers : La Rochelle et Tours. L’émission fut de courte durée et cessa en février 1421 (Lafaurie, p. 88).
A coin of the greatest rarity, absent from many collections. This issue of the Dauphin is known from only two mints: La Rochelle and Tours. The issue was short-lived and ceased in February 1421 (Lafaurie, p. 88)

HEIR APPARENT, CHARLES, REGENCY - COINAGE IN THE NAME OF CHARLES VI

(26/10/1418-20/10/1422)

Charles, born in 1403, is the fifth son of Charles VI and Isabella of Bavaria. He is declared dauphin after the death of his other brothers. On June 14, 1417, Charles VI appointed him lieutenant of the kingdom. After the capture of Paris on May 29, 1418, he moved to Bourges and was appointed regent on October 26, 1418. He created his Chamber of Accounts, a Court of coins in Bourges and a Parliament in Poitiers. He is recognized by all the south of France and helped by the Armagnac family. He had his cousin the Duke of Burgundy assassinated on September 10, 1419, did not recognize the validity of the Treaty of Troyes in 1420 and continued the fight against Henry V. He died on August 31, 1422 and Charles VI on October 21. The dolphin, who has just married Marie d'Anjou, the daughter of Louis II of Naples, finds himself facing an eleven-month-old child under the regency of his uncle, the Duke of Bedford. The struggle will last another thirty years between Charles VII and Henry VI of Lancaster.
