Exemplaire sur un petit flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés avec un petit plat sur la légende de droit. Joli revers de style fin. Belle patine vert olive foncé, légèrement granuleuse

Obverse description : Buste lauré d’Hadrien à droite, pan de paludamentum sur l’épaule gauche (O*2).
Obverse translation : “Hadrianus Augustus Pater Patriæ”, (Hadrien auguste père de la patrie).

Reverse legend : COS - III/ S|C.
Reverse description : Salus (la Santé) drapée, debout à droite, tenant une patère de la main gauche et nourrissant un serpent qu’elle tient de sa main droite.
Reverse translation : “Consul tertium”, (Consul pour la troisième fois).

Commentary


Poids léger. Buste allongé. Rubans de type 2. Le grand pan de paludamentum ne couvre que la pointe du cou.
Lightweight. Elongated bust. Type 2 ribbons. The large paludamentum flap only covers the tip of the neck.

Historical background


HADRIAN

(08/11/117-07/10/138)

Hadrian was born in 76 in Italica. Pupil of Trajan, he married in 100 Sabine, grand-niece of the emperor, and made a career in the staff of the latter, in particular during the Dacian campaign. In 117, he succeeded Trajan, and traveled for twenty years, visiting the entire empire - the only Emperor to have lent himself to this exercise. In 122, Hadrian went to Spain. Childless, he first chose Aélius to succeed him in 136, but the latter died on January 1, 138. Hadrian then adopted Antonin on February 25 and himself chose Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as Antoninus' heirs. He died on July 10, 138.
