Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire sur un petit flan mince, bien centré des deux côtés avec le grènetis visible au revers. Beau portrait. Revers bien venu à la frappe. Patine vert foncé. Le champ du revers a été gratté

Obverse


Obverse legend : HADRIANVS - AVGVSTVS.
Obverse description : Buste drapé, tête nue d’Hadrien à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A°21).
Obverse translation : “Hadrianus Augustus”, (Hadrien auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : TRANQVILLI-[TAS] AVG COS III P P/ S|C.
Reverse description : Tranquillitas (la Tranquillité) debout à gauche, tenant un sceptre long de la main droite, le bras gauche reposant sur une colonne.
Reverse translation : “Tranquillitas Augusti// Consul tertium Pater Patriæ”, (La Tranquillité de l’auguste consul pour la troisième fois père de la patrie).

Commentary


Poids léger. David Sear décrit le buste comme cuirassé. Nous ne voyons pas de trace de ptéryges ou de cuirasse sous le paludamentum.
Lightweight. David Sear describes the bust as armored. We see no trace of pteryges or armor beneath the paludamentum.

Historical background


HADRIAN

(08/11/117-07/10/138)

Hadrian was born in 76 in Italica. Pupil of Trajan, he married in 100 Sabine, grand-niece of the emperor, and made a career in the staff of the latter, in particular during the Dacian campaign. In 117, he succeeded Trajan, and traveled for twenty years, visiting the entire empire - the only Emperor to have lent himself to this exercise. In 122, Hadrian went to Spain. Childless, he first chose Aélius to succeed him in 136, but the latter died on January 1, 138. Hadrian then adopted Antonin on February 25 and himself chose Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus as Antoninus' heirs. He died on July 10, 138.
