Ancienne colonie espagnole, la République de Guinée Équatoriale adhère à la Communauté économique et monétaire de l'Afrique centrale ( CEMAC) en 1984. Le 1er janvier 1985, elle entre au sein de la BEAC et adopte le Franc CFA.
