Historical background

CIVIL WARS

(68-69)

After the disappearance of Vindex, troubles persisted in Gaul for another two years. First rallied to Galba, the Rhine armies sided with Vitellius who was proclaimed in early January 69 by his troops. After the disappearance of Vitellius in Rome on December 20 by the Danubian troops who had rallied Vespasian, the troubles did not cease in Gaul. The rebirth of a "Gallic" particularism and the ephemeral "Gallic Empire", proclaimed by Civilis, the Batavian, joined by Julius Tutor and Julius Classicus, both Treveri and Julius Sabinus of Lingon, were to cause a reaction from Rome. Vespasian, the new emperor, sent Q. Petillius Cerialis to Gaul to crush the sedition. The Gauls were defeated on the Moselle and the conspirators then experienced various fates. Gaul had returned to obedience to Rome.
