Historical background

Gelderland - Gelderland DUCHY - CHARLES D'Egmont

(1492-1538)

Charles of Egmont (1467-1538) was Duke of Gelderland. It belongs to the large family of Egmont who played a major role in the history of the Netherlands in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Charles had to struggle against the pretensions of Maximilian of Austria and Charles Quint. On the death of Charles of Egmont, the Duchy of Guelders was incorporated into the Spanish Netherlands. Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, son of René II and Philippa of Guelders, demanded the restitution of the duchy in favor of the head of his mother. Charles Quint evaded the question and did not return the duchy.
