Historical background

GREECE - CHIOS ISLAND - PHILIP-MARIA VISCONTI

(1421-1436)

The island of Chios was occupied in 1304 by Benedetto Zaccarias, a Genoese adventurer in the service of the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus II. The Zaccarias were driven out in 1329 and replaced by the Genoese. From 1362, the island was in the hands of Genoese, also known as Giustiniani, who retained power until the Turkish invasion of 1566. Philip Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan (1412-1447) is the son of Jean-Galéas (+1402), the brother of Jean-Marie (+1412) and the brother-in-law of Louis d'Orléans, assassinated in 1407. After the departure of the French from Genoa in 1409, he was also doge of Genoa between 1421 and 1436 and it is in this capacity that he coined in Chios.
