Historical background

GREAT-BRITAIN - ANNE STUART - CHARLES II

(1660-1685)

Charles II is the eldest son of Charles I and Henrietta of France. He was born on May 29, 1630. After the execution of his father, he took refuge in Scotland and was proclaimed king in 1651 by his supporters. That same year he was defeated by Cromwell at Worcester and left England. In 1660 General Monk dictated through Parliament the return of Charles II. His father's judges were tortured and the Presbyterians persecuted. Lacking resources, he sold Dunkirk and Mardick to Louis XIV. He died in 1685 without an heir. His brother James II was crowned king.
