Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Gratien à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A'a).

Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Gratianus Augustorum Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Gratien pieux heureux auguste des augustes).

Reverse

Reverse legend : GLORIA NO-VI SAECVLI/ N|-// TCON.

Reverse description : Gratien debout de face, tourné à gauche, tenant le labarum de la main droite et appuyé sur un bouclier de la main gauche.

Reverse translation : “Gloria Novi Sæculi”, (La Gloire d’un nouveau siècle).

Poids très léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées.

Born in 359, Gratien was named Augustus at the age of 8. Having become "Senior Augustus" after the death of his uncle in 378, he had to share power with his half-brother Valentinian II and chose Theodosius to assist him in the East. In 378, he had the statue of Victory, a pagan reference in his eyes, removed from the senate hall. After the revolt of Magnus Maximus, he fled but was assassinated in Lyon on August 25, 383..
