Commentary
This token, popularized under the name of Cumberland Jack, takes the style of the gold sovereign. Upon the death of William IV, Princess Victoria succeeded him to the throne of the United Kingdom, but the Salic law in force prevented her from becoming sovereign of the Kingdom of Hanover. Her uncle Ernest Augustus therefore became King of Hanover. The latter was a very conservative and very anti-Catholic member of the House of Lords. His unpopularity was growing as much due to his spending as to his whims or multiple news items attributed to him by the press. The reverse is therefore a satire of the character, his departure for Hanover being ultimately a relief for a large part of the public.
