Commentary

The Battle of Portobelo was the first major action of the War of Jenkins' Ear, ending with the capture and destruction of Portobelo. The fight lasted barely two hours. British ships entered the harbor and attacked Fort Todofierro. After the fort's destruction, which posed no problems, the British landed an expeditionary force led by Lieutenant Broderick, who captured the fortress. De la Vega then capitulated, without attempting to resist from within. Euphoric at this all-too-easy victory, or perhaps furious because he had found no trace of the treasures he had expected, Vernon ordered the systematic destruction of the city.
