Obverse


Obverse description : Buste radié et cuirassé de Gordien III à gauche, tenant un bouclier à tête de Méduse centrale (serpents des cheveux nets) à gauche et un bâton de commandement posé sur l’épaule à droite, les rubans de la couronne de laurier flottant derrière la tête, vu de trois-quarts avant. On aperçoit quelques écailles de la cuirasse, la ptéryge de droite et un baudrier, sans pouvoir dire si ce baudrier tient le gladius ou le bouclier.
Obverse legend : AUTOK K M ANT GORDIANOS SEB (Autokratoros Kaisar Marcos Antonios Gordianos Sebastos) .
Obverse translation : (L’empereur césar Marc Antoine Gordien auguste).

Reverse


Reverse description : Aigle debout à droite, la tête et la queue à gauche, les ailes déployées, tenant une couronne feuillue de lauriers dans son bec, entre ses pattes, un bélier courant à gauche, tête à droite, sous un croissant de lune.
Reverse legend : DHMARC E X UPATOB (Dhmarcikhs Ex Ousias).
Reverse translation : (Revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne, consul pour la deuxième fois).

Commentary


On note que les sigma sont gravés en C. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire reproduit dans l’ouvrage de M. Prieur (CP 1434)
Dans la base TSP maintenue par Michel Prieur, vingt-six exemplaires sont maintenant répertoriés. Les seuls musées à disposer d’un exemplaire sont Londres (entré en 1989), Berlin (ex vente Cahn octobre 1931), Yale, Princeton, Gaziantep et Jerusalem.
