Reverse description : Rome nicéphore, casquée et drapée assise à gauche sur un trône orné de pattes de lion, tenant une petite victoriola de la main droite tendue et une haste transversale de la main gauche, appuyée sur son bouclier.
Reverse legend : UP TERTU-LLIA-NOU MARKIANO-POLIT(WN).

Commentary


Médaillon de dix assaria (decassaria). Trou de centrage visible des deux côtés. Buste exceptionnel. Rubans de type 3. Cuirasse orné de l’égide. Épaulières ornées d’une tête de lion. Ptéryges larges et tombantes. Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire reproduit dans l’ouvrage de Varbonov, Greek Imperial Coins, vol 1, Dacia, Moesia Superior, Moesia Inferior, p. 185, n° 1931.

Gordian III is the grandson of Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II, ephemeral emperors of the year 238. At the request of the people of Rome, he is chosen as Caesar by Balbin and Pupian and succeeds them after their assassinations. Emperor at 13, married at 16, killed at 19, this is how the life of this young man could be summed up, victim of the appetites of Philippe the Arab, new prefect of the praetorium.
